Of all places in the West where livestock grazing is inappropriate, the Escalante is probably near the top. The BLM recognized this fact when it closed the river to livestock grazing in 1999. With the removal of livestock, the river corridor, with its beautiful native willows and cottonwood, has recovered. The cattle have been gone for 20 years but some bones still remain as a haunting reminder that we must be better stewards over our lands and livestock.
