Hubbell Trading Ring
Hubbell Trading Ring
The Hubbell Trading Post was founded in Ganado, Arizona, in 1878. For more than a century it played a fundamental part in the history of Southwest American Indian peoples. It floundered a little at first as relations between the natives and the American government were poor. It found its stride in the early 1900’s around the time Hubbell began selling native american arts and crafts to the Fred Harvey Company. Hubbell would become the single largest supplier of blankets, pottery, jewelry and other native handicrafts for the Fred Harvey Company for many years.
The Hubbell ring is a nod to the style of Navajo jewelry that would have come through the Hubbell Trading Post during the 1930-1940s to be sold to tourists. Trading post owners instructed the silversmiths on styles that might be popular with tourist and so we see the influence of art deco in native work during these years.
